For this unit, students experimented with crayon melting by simply using an old hair dryer and recycled crayons. Students were inspired by a local visiting artist who had demonstrated this technique to them in a grid process that he had used to melt crayons and then used liquid watercolor to fill in his space.
Students were asked to focus in on nature as their theme, and to experiment with the process of melting and moving around wax to create a piece. Students used several tools including a palette knife to achieve this technique. Students were encouraged to work with layers during their construction.
