Sketchbooking

8th grade students started the unit out by learning about color theory and the different techniques associated with sketchbooking.  Students were challenged weekly on different techniques, concepts, and color schemes in order to create their two-page spread.  Students also incorporated artist's pages and researched artists that used sketchbooks in their own art making.  Students dedicated these pages to that particular person and created mini works of art on that two-page spread. Here are the different pages and ideas that the 8th grade students came up with.

Mosaics

6th and 7th grade students learned about the art of tile mosaics.  Students could choose between either a form or creating a form out of clay in which they would mosaic. Students researched different mosaic artists as well as a concept that they wanted to work from.  Students experimented with cutting glass, fitting tile, and applying grout properly in order to create their mosaics.  Here is what 6th and 7th graders created.

Artist Holiday Card

For their last sketchbook assignment of the year, students created holiday cards from some of their favorite artists. They could either choose from a list or choose one of their favorite artists from which to create a holiday card.  They took inspiration in research and knowing the artist's style to create their piece.  Here is what 6th and 7th graders created.

8th Grade Clay Exploration

8th grade students experimented with hand building and wheel throwing this nine weeks.  Students had the opportunity to glaze or paint their clay once they were finished.  Students chose to make both functional and sculptural pieces for their hand building assignment.  Here is what 8th grade students came up with.
