Inspired by contemporary artist Michel Keck, students were challenge to create animal pieces from collage materials.
The unit's focus was Pop Art, and students studied many pop artists including Warhol, Lichtenstein, and Max. As a class we discussed the different elements of Pop Art. Our local museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach, also had an Andy Warhol display at the time which was a major influence for this unit of study. Students were asked to choose an animal and think of different textures and patterns to make up their animal's body and possibly the background environment.
These turned out to be very large, eye-catching pieces and a couple of the students even were able to sell their pieces!
Here are the designs the 5th and 6th graders created.
