Paint Swatch Lanscapes, Animals, and Portraits OH MY!

Student will be looking at the artwork of Jennifer Lashbrook and her inspiration work using paint swatches.  Students then in return influence by her work will create a work of art using only paint swatches.  Students were given examples of landscapes, animals and portraits.  Students worked with 2D design as well as color theory when developing their idea. Students broke down a photograph as far as figuring out what colors to include in each section of the work.  students used different cutting stratigies and placement for planning of this piece. Here is what 4th and 5th graders came up with for this project.

Chuck Close Inspired Portraits

Students for this assignment were asked to create a self portrait for this piece.  Students learned about portrait artist Chuck Close and his amazing photorealism portrait work.  Students worked with proportion, value, and different drawing techniques.  Students also learned how to work with the grid technique to draw an image.  This tool could be used in their final draft or could be something that they just added to their artist tool kit. Student were asked to create an innovative grid through their subject.  In each square of the grid they were to use a different drawing technique that was introduced in class. Students were encourage to split their picture up into at least 6 sections first.   Students were to choose between 6-10 different techniques.  Before getting started they were to come up with a rough draft of their ideas.  Here are some examples of what 4th and 5th grade students came up with.

Portfolio Designs-3rd-5th Grade

Students for the start of this school year created portfolio for storage of all their amazing artwork that they will complete this year.  The first task after construction of the portfolio was an innovative design challenge.  Students were each give a piece of black duct tape and given limited instruction on what to do with it.  The first step was that they were instructed to cut the tape up using an exacto knife any way they wanted to.  Once cut up, students then placed the tape on one side if the portfolio any way they saw fit.  After this was done students were instructed to create a realistic or abstract design from what thy saw on their portfolio.  Here is was the advanced visual arts students constructed.
