Clay Houses

6th and 7th students were challenged to create a 3-D clay house.  Students had to choose a concept to work behind and did research on different artists that worked in clay or in their concept of choice.  Students started making sketches of different ideas that they would use for their structures. Ideas varied from actual architectural form to Dr. Seuss inspired houses to tree houses.  Students worked with the slab technique to construct their house and were encouraged to add embellishments to enhance their design.  Here's is what 6th and 7th graders came up with.

Foreshortening Figure Drawing

Students in the 8th grade were challenged to a figure student assignment that combined foreshortening and their own personal life drawing skills.  Students took a position that demonstrated the art of foreshortening and photographed themselves in the pose before starting on their piece.  Students were encouraged to use a variety of medias as well as surface areas for this assignment.  This is what the 8th graders created.

Collograph Prints

Students were given the assignment to create a print based on a concept of their choosing.  Students created visual mind maps to represent their research of their chosen concept.  Students learned about the history and process of printmaking and, in particular, the art of collagraph printmaking.  Students used different crafts and recycled materials to construct their plates prior to printing.  Students then applied different colored inks, 2-D, and 3-D materials to their final editions.  Here is what 6th and 7th grade students created.

Living Museum Extension

Students were challenged to apply what they had learned during the living museum art theory project in creating another piece of work.  The criteria for this piece was that it needed to be "in the style" of the artist that they had done extensive research on in the beginning of the school year.  In particular, students were to focus on the painting style that their artist was known for.  Students were asked to look at subject mater, art style, and colors while choosing their design.  As part of the criteria students were asked to work on an "alternative" surface - some thing other than paper or canvas that they normally wouldn't paint on.  This challenged students to experiment with different surfaces and how paint responded to those surfaces.  Here are some examples of what the 6th and 7th graders created.
